  Files were used as a method of tracking individuals and families

If you are a researcher into archives of repressive regimes we would like to hear from you.

We are interested to hear from other researchers working with archives of repressive regimes.  That is, documentation collected by the State on individuals or people under the premise of ethnic, religious, or political reasons.

Whilst the project focuses on the archives of the defunct Aborigines Departments in Western Australia, (1897-1972), it is valuable to compare the experiences of researchers of similar archives throughout the world.  Of particular interest is  comparison of such issues as;

  • access to archives

  • storage and government strategies of archive management

  • ethics in dealing with content of files

  • preservation and uses for research
