This book is also available in paperback. (Book One of The Crimson Shadow series)
The first novels I read by this fabulous author were the Dark Elf trilogy. It took quite a while to adjust to the dark, sinister storyline. No such problem with The Sword of Bedwyr which is pure fast-paced fantasy adventure. It contains much graphic violence that somehow is so entertaining with lots of "off-the-cuff" humour that you just can't be offended (or take it too seriously.) It is a great book in the way "True Lies" is a great film...it is pure entertainment! The characters however, become very real and you really get wrapped up in the rollercoaster adventures encountered in nearly every chapter. Luthien is the stereotypical hero (there's nothing wrong with that.) Oliver deBurrows is his outrageous halfling partner in crime. This little but still very dangerous character is a real gem. Salvatore injects much real humour through this loveable little rogue, who makes up for his shortness of stature with an excess of personality. The Crimson Shadow series will never rival The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) as the ultimate fantasy epic but once started you'll have trouble putting it down. Review by Brian
