TUROK 2 SEEDS OF EVIL - REVIEW

turok2_3.jpg (9947 bytes)
Not even a mother could love this!

I must admit I came across the original Turok by chance picking it up cheaply secondhand.  The previous owner raved about how good it was and he was right...what a great game!

So, I picked up Turok 2 about 3 days after it was released here in Australia.

The first pleasant surprise was the price of $80.00AUS.   Now that is still a lot of money but when you compare it to the $99.00AUS I paid for Donkey Kong Country 2 on the Super Nintendo quite a few years ago, I think you can see the relative increase in value the N64 is offering its followers.

I played the game for about 3 weeks before the Expansion Pak was available.  I picked that up for $40.00AUS as soon as it was released.

I have been playing it now for about 2 months and am totally engrossed in it.  I played the original using a lot of the cheats available off the Net but have played Turok 2 and reached Level 5 without any cheats (so far.)   It is a lot more rewarding to do it on your own.

Well, after I read a magazine review giving it the first 10 out of 10 I have ever seen, I had pretty high expectations.  I am glad to report it really is a great game.  Not only do you get the challenge of the main game to enjoy by yourself but there are 3 multiplayer modes to shoot whichever friends are willing to give it a try.

I used the controller as it was configured in the original Turok.  It takes some getting used to but once mastered gives great control and accuracy.

The detail of the graphics is amazingThe graphics are superb as are the sound effects and playability.   There is less platform-type jumping in this game than in the original.  Still, Turok 2 has a great balance of strategy, skills and outright blasting of a wide range of uglies that keeps you wanting to play on.

Sniper Scope - zoom in and get them with one shot!Thankfully the weapons have changed quite a bit with a couple of weapons having an advanced sniper capability which enables you to see and shoot enemies before they can see you.

You can give your enemies a big headache!Another interesting weapon tracks onto the heads of your opponents then homes in and explodes their brains all over the place...gross but cool!

Not so dangerous with their heads blown off!The game is huge and is more sophisticated than the original with enemies having more varied behaviour.  They also react to weapons in various ways depending on the enemy and the weapons used.  You can shoot limbs off, blast holes right through them or watch them run around after you have blown their heads off!

N64 Expansion PakThe graphics were a standout before the 4MB Ram Expansion Pak.   The Pak improves the detail quite markedly and is well worth the investment.  There have been many reports of overheating and game shutdown when using the Pak however I have only had the game freeze on me once.  This was when I paused the game for over an hour.  Now if I leave the game on when I'm not actually playing , I don't pause it but I make sure I leave Turok in a safe place, i.e. where there are no enemies in the area.

The only real criticism of the game are there being only two save points per level.  I have lost many hours of sleep staying on into the night because to stop would mean having to start over again the next day.

I have just read that Turok 3 is underway (due for release Christmas 99) and can't wait.  I give this game my highest recommendation.  If you get into it...happy hunting...

Thumbs UpMY OPINION "Quality...Quality...Quality!   The thinking man's bloodbath!  Just about the most fun you can have in a darkened room by yourself!"

Visually, it's a feast...in the actual game the flames look so real!

Zoom in for a one shot kill!

Raptor
Very agile and hard to kill but very amusing when their heads are blown off...they run around like the proverbial chook!
