My husband and my eight year old
daughter have had a deal for the past couple of years. Sometimes they go to the
movies together and after getting an overdose of Disney and other wishy-washy
kiddie movies, hubby told her that he would watch her movies if she would occasionally let
him watch one of his choice. I'm not sure if he's ruing the day he made that deal...what with trips to the toilet, requests for popcorn and other nibblies and the constant questions about what the heck was happening and what does that mean? I have a feeling he wishes he had stuck to the kiddies movies and waited until the ones he wanted to see became available on video. That way he wouldn't get to miss vital parts of movies and I wouldn't have to listen to the complaints of why couldn't you have gone to the lavatory before the movie! It's too late now of course. Just because our daughter happens to be bored out of her mind watching his choices, it doesn't mean she is going to give up the chance of telling everyone at school that she went along to see an "M" rated movie...no way. Back to Deep Impact. Hubby didn't get much out of this movie at the cinema (due to a fidgeting 8 year old) and because of this I presumed it wasn't that good and when it came out on video I wasn't first in line to rent it. I was wrong. We watched it the other night and all three of us thought it was wonderful.
Robert Duvall heads a team of astronauts aboard the Messiah, a one-off spacecraft built with the aim of destroying the meteor. Each country has its own way of dealing with what may come but this movie follows America's tackling of the problem. A lottery is devised and a person's social security number will determine if they gain a place in the labyrinth of tunnels and underground rooms that have been built to accommodate one million people. This movie stirs up a lot of emotions, most of which I hope I never have to face. What would we do if it really happened? Three quarters of the way through the movie I found myself with tears running down my cheeks. My mind had drifted to the unimaginable thought of handing my daughter over to a stranger. If there was indeed a chance at saving her life, would I do it. Would I give her to complete strangers in the hope that she may survive even though the odds were against her? Would I be able to let her go and hope she wouldn't suddenly find herself alone, with no one to turn to, having to face this catastrophic event alone. Or would I keep her with me and face what may be, together, as a family? This movie follows the path of several characters including the astronauts and shows us how they deal with this situation all in their own way. The special effects are superb especially the giant tidal wave that heads for America. If you like action, drama, and high charged emotional flicks with some awesome effects thrown in...don't miss this one...you won't be disappointed.
