At the beginning of this movie we see Max Reed at school.   His teacher is asking the class what his father does for a living.  Max tells the teacher that his father is a liar.  The teacher looks confused but then realises that Max means "Lawyer".  Max just shrugs his shoulders...Liar...Lawyer...they are both the same to Max.  Why, because his father, Fletcher Reed may be a Lawyer but he's also a liar!

Max and FletcherMax loves his father but has learnt to live with disappointment.   His father, Fletcher (Jim Carrey) is a hot shot lawyer who is very good at his job.   The reason that he's so good however, is because he is able to lie very well.   The problem is that Fletcher seems to lie both in and out of the courtroom.   He is forever making promises to his son but always failing to keep them.   When he promises to go to Max's Max Makes a birthday wishbirthday party and fails (once again) to show up, Max makes a birthday wish while he blows out the candles

"I wish, for just one day, Dad couldn't tell a lie."

Fletcher and his clientWell, the wish comes true and now Fletcher can't tell a single lie for one whole day.  He can't even write down a lie.

Fletcher and Max's mum Audrey are divorced.  She is fed up with all the promises that Fletcher makes and breaks to Max and decides that she will marry her boyfriend and take Max to live in Boston.  Fletcher now realises that all the time Max has been around, he's been able to see him anytime he wanted to but instead of spending time with his son he was always making excuses for not turning up.   Now that he may lose him he realises just how much he loves him and how much he needs Max.

In the CourtroomI won't tell you any more about what happens...you will have to rent the video but it's really worth watching.  If you like Jim Carrey you will really love this movie.  Jim Carrey is brilliant as Fletcher.  There are lots of scenes that will have you rolling around laughing.  My eight year old daughter thought it was hilarious.   Justin Cooper who plays Max is a wonderful young actor and I think we'll be seeing him in a lot more movies.

At the end of this movie, when the credits are rolling there are a whole heap of bloopers...keep watching for them, they are really funny.

jumanji.jpg (4961 bytes)Alan Parish and his friend Sarah sit down to play a board game called Jumanji.  What they don't know at the time is that this is more than just a board game...a lot more!  Strange creatures start to emerge from the game and chase Sarah away but Alan literally gets caught up in the game.  He is whisked away to the world of Jumanji where he is trapped for over twenty years.

Twenty six years later, after their parents are killed, Judy and Peter go to live with their Aunt Nora.  They find the game, roll the dice and Alan is finally released.  However Alan is not released alone.  With him come all the strange and dangerous creatures of Jumanji and now it is up to the three of them, along with Alan's original partner Sarah, to replay the game of Jumanji and make everything right again.

Robin wrestles a crocodileThis movie is full of wonderful special effects and some very funny scenes.  The Alan who is released from Jumanji is now a grown man however there are so many things he has missed out on, like growing up the normal way.   He has trouble shaving, he's never driven a car before and he still has all the fears and emotions of a young boy.

All the characters play their parts well, but you just can't go past Robin Williams when it comes to sheer brilliance.  Watching him is a delight.  While there are a few "on the edge of your seat" scenes that very young children may find a little scary, most kids will adore this fine movie and so will their parents.
