PinThis is where you will find all those little things that keep popping into my head and which I want to include on this site without having to make separate categories for them.

PinI can't say what you will find in this section in the future but suffice to say that these pages will no doubt consist of a wide variety of things...snippets of information, computer tips and tricks, recipes, pieces of javascript code and javascript games, free graphics, crafts, parents pages...who knows!   The possibilities are endless...

MAKING GIFS USING PUBLISHER 97

Using Microsoft Publisher 97 you can create some really neat graphic images that are automatically saved to the GIF format.

Here's what you do.

  • Begin by creating a new, blank Web publication (note I did say "Web" publication)

  • Use the table tool to create a table the size of the entire page.

  • Now it's time to do what you like with the page.  Use word art to add some nice text, add graphics, colours, use the drawing objects...whatever you want.  This is really good for making banners and logos for your web pages.  If you want to save this before you have finished it or just want a copy which you can later change, first save it as a default Publisher publication.

  • When you're happy with your result go to the File menu and select the Publish To Folder menu item.

  • Choose a folder to send it to and then click the OK button.  (Publisher 97 automatically sends it to a default folder called Publish, if you wish, you can create a sub folder in here now.)

  • Note - each time you make a new graphic in this way, you will have to create a new folder (Publisher 97 gives you the option of   overwriting the last folder or creating a new one).  If you are going to keep all the graphics you make in Publisher 97 in the one place, just make new sub folders in the Publish folder each time.  If you end up moving the graphic and don't need to keep a copy of it in the Publish folder - just overwrite it.)

  • Now exit the program and go to your Microsoft Publisher 97 Folder (it's usually found in the Program Files folder) and look in the Publish folder.  In here you will find the folder(s) you created above.  Open it and inside you will find both the Web page you created, along with a GIF file of the image you created for that Web page.

  • This is a wonderful trick, made possible by the fact that Publisher 97 saves each table as a GIF image.

  • If you want to resize the image try using a graphics program like ThumbsPlus (a graphics viewer that lets you manipulate images on the fly) or some other program like Paint Shop Pro.  Basically, any graphic program you have that will let you view and manipulate GIFs will do.

I particularly like using Publisher 97, it's easy to use and you can assemble text and images without too much fuss.
