INTRODUCTION
The first Piers Anthony book I read was On a
Pale Horse (Book One of the Incarnations of Immortality Series) and from then on I was
hooked! I couldn't get enough of this fabulous author and, lucky for me, this guy is one
of the most prolific authors around. His most famous series would have to be the Xanth
novels which number into the twenties. These books sell extremely well although most of
Piers' die hard fans would probably list one of his other series as their favourite...and
believe me there are quite a number to chose from.
For me, the Incarnations Series will always be among
the best books I have ever read.

REALTY CHECK
Added 6th July, 1999
"This novel builds bridges between generations as it builds them between
worlds. There is a quality here of classic Heinlein. The main characters face the unknown
with courage instead of fear. Encountering the fantastic makes them think better instead
of not thinking at all. Realty Check is a celebration of life, and a love story
between grandparents and a granddaughter, between cousins, and between friends. Most of
all, Realty Check is the first novel to fully explore the impact of the internet on
the American family, albeit in science-fiction terms.
Reality is up for grabs when you grab this book. And the
value of your property is sure to go up. That's a promise."

Well done Marisol

EL
NINO HITS FLORIDA
Marisol, a member of the alt.fan.piers-anthony
newsgroup, was one of the many people who were concerned about the diabolical weather that
hit Florida.
Seajay at HiPiers replied to Marisol's concerns on
behalf of Piers.
Thanks for your concern. Here is what Piers has had
to say about about the recent weather:
El Nino flooded us in winter; the
water surrounded our tree farm and another two inches would have started flooding our
driveway. There were scattered tornadoes, too. Then it abruptly stopped, and all spring we
had a drought, and the water level dropped one foot a month. Now Florida is beset by
wildfires galore, mostly on the other side of the state. So far we have escaped the worst
of everything, but I have had to water our flowering shrubs every couple of days lest they
shrivel. In a decade our two highest temperatures were 98 degrees F and 99 degrees, just
once each. Suddenly this JeJune we had 100 degrees four times. In the past several days,
we have had rain. The temperature is down, and the threat of a fire abated. We did have a
concern. Our tree farm is a peninsula in a small lake, so it wouldn't be easy for a
traveling fire to find us, but our closely growing slash pines would go up in a moment if
it did, or if lightning struck. So we keep an eye on things.
Seajay for HiPiers: Piers is not online himself. hipiers@mindspring.

CONGRATULATIONS
TO MARISOL
Well, it seems that one of our Newsgroup Buddies is
famous! Marisol has had a review of Piers Anthony's Online Book "Volk",
published in the L.A. Times.
Marisol was kind enough to give me permission to
place the review here, so read on...
Volk-by Piers Anthony--a novel only
for sale over the Internet (www.xlibris.com and www.pulpless.com )--has three main
characters. Through their eyes, we see the development of World War II. They are Quality,
a Quaker who will test her pacifism in the war zone; Lane, Quality's fiancé, who joined
the war early with the RAF; and Ernst, a German student who befriends Lane before the war
and later joins the German SS.
The writing is fluid and clear.
Anthony's storytelling is superb. The Spanish Civil War is explored as well as World War
II. There is pain and hope; love is lost and found; and ugly truths are learned. The idea
that death camps for German officers were run by Americans at the end of the war may prove
controversial but deserves complete attention (Anthony in his author's notes presents
evidence to substantiate their existence).
Overall, this novel is outstanding. I
learned a lot about World War II and the foolishness of war. I recommend "Volk"
to anyone who enjoys historical novels.
