To this day both Harrer and the
Dalai Lama remain friends. In 1959 the Dalai Lama was exilled to India where he still
lives to this day. He is also the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Harrer, now in his
mid 80's wrote the book "Seven Years in Tibet" in 1953. It has sold over three
million copies and has been translated into 48 languages. Harrer has written 19 books
since Seven Years in Tibet, based on his 600 expeditions. Brad Pitt gives an outstanding performance as Harrer. His Austrian accent was totally believeable and as usual there is a lot more to Brad Pitt than his good looks. This man can act and I would go as far as to say that he would have to be one of the most outstanding actors of his generation. He seems to actively work against being typecast as his roles to date have shown. Nor does he actively take roles that revolve around his looks ... you just have to watch "Kalifornia" to see what I mean. David Thewlis is an actor who we will no doubt be seeing a lot more of and the young man (Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk) who portrays the Dalai Lama has a very bright future ahead of him in the world of acting. Although the acting in this movie was first class, the cinematography was breathtaking. You could almost feel the icy winds of the Himalyas and the majesty of the Holy City (even though most of this movie was actually filmed in Argentina and Canada.) John Williams soundtrack fitted perfectly to round off this uplifting film which is full of delightful surprises and occasional pockets of warm and very funny humour.
