I saw this movie when it was first released and to be
honest I was disappointed back then. In my opinion the movie just didn't live up to the
incredible amount of hype that surrounded it. The other night I rented it as part of
a weekly package deal and I adored it. I'm going to have to make a concerted effort
to stop listening to hype and just look at a movie through my own eyes, not through my
preconceived notions of what everyone else thinks.
The Full Monty tells the story of a group of steel workers who are
laid off when their plant closes down. Without work, they are all struggling to make
ends meet and when Gaz (Robert Carlyle) sees that the "Chippendales" can pull in
huge crowds of women he thinks "well, why can't we!" So begins the story
of a group of very unlikely sex symbols who are willing to do the one thing that
the Chippendales don't...go the full monty!
This movie shows in some hilarious
ways that men and women are not that different when it comes down to the bare
basics. We all have our insecurities, especially when it comes to our
bodies. Dave thinks he's too fat, Horse is a lot smaller than he would like
to be, one guy has saggy boobs and is pigeon chested, while another seems to get
a rise whenever he's surrounded by women...and so the list goes on. What this movie shows us is that through a very unusual method they
gain more than money...they triumph over their insecurities albeit in a very funny way.
With a great soundtrack, terrific acting and a wonderful
script, I thoroughly recommend this movie.

NINE MONTHS
Cast - Hugh Grant (Samuel), Julianne Moore (Rebecca), Tom
Arnold (Marty), Joan Cusack (Gail), Jeff Goldblum (Sean), Robin Williams (Dr. Kosevich)
Director - Chris Columbus
Producers - Chris Columbus, Mark Radcliffe, Michael Barnathan, and Anne Francois
Based upon the movie, "NeufMois" by Patrick Braoude
Samuel and Rebecca are a couple who have a near perfect
relationship that is suddenly turned into utter chaos when Rebecca finds out that she is
pregnant. Enter Marty and Gail, a couple who already have three girls and are once
again pregnant, this time hoping for a boy. Although well meaning, they are
overbearing, dumping themselves plonk in the middle of Samuel and Rebecca's life and telling them how wonderful it is to have children, oblivious to the fact
that their girls are unruly to say the least.
Rebecca is thrilled with the prospect of becoming a mother
although the same can't quite be said of Samuel. The guy is totally distraught and
what follows is some very funny viewing. Jeff Goldblum, Samuel's single
friend Sean is only too happy to give advice and Robin Williams steals the show in his
brilliant portrayal of the bumbling Dr. Kosevich.

I love female heroes and female
action characters and this movie fits the bill perfectly. Usually, when a female is
cast in the role of a lead character, although she may play a hero, it's usually the
motherly type of hero and not the shoot-em-up, in your face kind. Well, this movie
has both and what do you know...they're played by the same person! Geena Davis is
Samantha Caine, a wife, mother and school teacher who has been suffering from amnesia for
many years. She enlists the help of down and out detective Mitch Henessey (Samuel
L. Jackson) to help her trace her past and find out who she really is.
It turns out that before her amnesia,
Samantha was known as Charly Baltimore, a secret agent who is also one of the most deadly
female characters seen on the screen in a long time. Charly has been laying low in
Samantha's subconscious but now she is slowly emerging and as Charly comes out, so too
does the cold-blooded killer that she is.
This movie is action packed, violent
and has some incredible special effects. Combined with this is a good script and
some very good acting. There are a lot of very nasty characters, all who want to see
Charly dead but even though Charly is emerging, Samantha, the housewife and mother is
still present. Who will end up in control of this lethal body?

I thoroughly recommend this movie if you want to see
some fast paced, high tech action!
