KISS THE GIRLS

Morgan Freeman - Kiss the GirlsCast - Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Cary Elwes, Tony Goldwyn, Jay O. Sanders
Director - Gary Fleder
Producers - David Brown, Joe Wizan
Script by - David Klass

Based on the novel Kiss the Girls by James Patterson
Length -116 minutes

Ashley JuddWhile this movie is not quite in the same league as Seven, there are certainly some similarities and if you enjoy a good murder mystery look no further than Kiss the Girls.  Morgan Freeman plays the role of forensic psychiatrist Alex Cross who becomes personally involved in a police case when his niece turns out to be one of a series of girls who have been kidnapped, two of them turning up dead.

Ashley Judd is Kate McTiernan, a young doctor who is kidnapped and held captive by the killer who refers to himself as "Casanova".    Kate is a brave, spirited woman and manages to escape. She joins forces with Alex to track down the killer who, as it turns out is a collector of beautiful women.

This movie has a few very good twists and keeps you guessing right to the very end.  Morgan Freeman is well cast as Alex Cross.  He has a strong screen presence and nowadays you really can't go wrong with any movie he stars in.  He just doesn't seem to pick bad scripts.  Ashley Judd portrays Kate wonderfully with just the right balance of guts and compassion.  This movie is full of actors you've seen before.  They may not be so famous that you could name them by sight but you're sure to find yourself thinking "where have I seen him before."

If you're looking for a well written, well acted suspense with some on the edge of your seat thrills you won't be disappointed with this movie!

STARSHIP TROOPERS

Starship Troopers LogoCast - Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Clancy Brown, Seth Gilliam, Patrick Muldoon, Michael Ironside
Director - Paul Verhoeven
Director of Photography - Jostt Vacano
Visual Effects Supervisor - Scott E. Anderson
Music - Basil Poledouris
Year - 1997
Length - 129 Minutes,

In BattleTaken on face value it is all too easy to dismiss this film as high tech teenage seat filler.  The cast is way too good looking, the violence over the top and the story pacey and predictable.

So what does it offer.  Firstly, the effects especially the insectoids are fantastic and utterly believable.  Then there are the slapstick messages throughout the movie that can be laughed at yet in subtle black ways point to the ridiculous nature of human action and ideals.  Finally there are messages about one way love and the problems you get into when the other person doesn't really care about you.  The violence is extreme almost unbelievable and definitely for the more mature.

Some of the bugsJohnny Rico is a young idealist who joins the infantry to fight "bugs" to impress his girlfriend.  She of course is "fond" of him but wants her career as a pilot in the space fleet.  Johnny finds boot camp pretty rough but he excels to become group leader.  It's all pretty predictable with lots of violent humour.

Things go horribly wrong when he causes one of his group to be accidentally killed in training and his girlfriend writes him a "dear John" letter.  He is just about to return to earth when he hears that his home city on earth has been completely destroyed by a bug asteroid.  Following that there is lots of fighting action against the bugs.

I won't give any more than that away.  I thoroughly enjoyed this video second time around but I wouldn't recommend it's for everyone.

I think if you can take it all in, it is not just gratuitous glitz and excessive violence.

DARK CITY

Dark City Cast - Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, Richard O'Brien
Director - Alex Proyas (The Crow)
Written by - Alex Proyas, Lem Dobbs and David S. Goyer (Blade)
Produced by - Alex Proyas and Andrew Mason
Year - 1998
Length - 103 Minutes
Released by - New Line Cinema

Emma (Jennifer Connelly) and one of The StrangersAfter the first half hour I was ready to give up on this movie however I'm glad I did persist and after about fifty minutes I found myself really enjoying it.  It's no mainstream blockbuster and I have a feeling that most people will give up on it very early.  Of those who do persist with it, I have a feeling that only half of them will see in it what I saw.  The rest will dismiss it as a waste of time.  This is a dark, slow movie that I think will become somewhat of a cult film in the tradition of Brazil.

Director - Alex Proyas

Dark City is a sci-fi whodunit.  Written and directed by Australian Alex Proyas (The Crow) it has the same eerie, dark feel to it as Batman's Gotham City.

The story follows murder suspect John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell.)   As the movie begins, we see John awaken in a bath, the body of a dead woman is in the same room.  John has amnesia and if it wasn't for the voice of  Doctor Schreber (Keiffer Sutherland) who narrates the first few minutes of the movie most people would probably give up there and then.  Thankfully, through the voice of Doctor Schreber we are given a tiny glimpse into what is going on.

Doctor Schreber and The StrangersIt seems that a dying race of alien beings called "The Strangers" have recruited the Doctor's help in conducting experiments to try and unlock the mysteries of the human soul.  This, they believe will help them in their fight to survive.

William HurtWilliam Hurt is Inspector Frank Bumstead, hot on the trail of murder suspect John Murdoch.  He joins forces with John's wife, Emma (Jennifer Connelly) a singer who hasn't seen her husband for the last three weeks.  John apparently left when he found her cheating on him although with his amnesia, John remembers neither this nor anything else about his wife.  All he has are a few fragmented memories of a childhood that may or may not be his.

The Strangers have the ability to "tune" or change reality at their will.  At the stroke of twelve every night they literally shut down the city and with the help of Doctor Schreber twist and manipulate the lives of  the people, intertwining their memories and completely changing reality.  However, John Murdoch, it seems, also possesses the gift of tuning and it is because of this that The Strangers are in hot pursuit of him, hoping they can find the answers to their quest for survival in his mind.

Rufus Sewell

This all sounds rather convoluted and it is necessary to really watch this movie to understand just what is going on.  It does, thankfully, all come together in the end.  Strangely enough, considering the dark tones of this movie, it is actually a love story at heart...albeit a very strange one!

Give it a go...you may be surprised at just how good it is!
