KISS THE GIRLS
Based on the novel Kiss the Girls by James
Patterson
Ashley Judd is Kate McTiernan, a young doctor who is kidnapped and held captive by the killer who refers to himself as "Casanova". Kate is a brave, spirited woman and manages to escape. She joins forces with Alex to track down the killer who, as it turns out is a collector of beautiful women. This movie has a few very good twists and keeps you guessing right to the very end. Morgan Freeman is well cast as Alex Cross. He has a strong screen presence and nowadays you really can't go wrong with any movie he stars in. He just doesn't seem to pick bad scripts. Ashley Judd portrays Kate wonderfully with just the right balance of guts and compassion. This movie is full of actors you've seen before. They may not be so famous that you could name them by sight but you're sure to find yourself thinking "where have I seen him before." If you're looking for a well written, well acted suspense with some on the edge of your seat thrills you won't be disappointed with this movie!
So what does it offer. Firstly, the effects especially the insectoids are fantastic and utterly believable. Then there are the slapstick messages throughout the movie that can be laughed at yet in subtle black ways point to the ridiculous nature of human action and ideals. Finally there are messages about one way love and the problems you get into when the other person doesn't really care about you. The violence is extreme almost unbelievable and definitely for the more mature.
Things go horribly wrong when he causes one of his group to be accidentally killed in training and his girlfriend writes him a "dear John" letter. He is just about to return to earth when he hears that his home city on earth has been completely destroyed by a bug asteroid. Following that there is lots of fighting action against the bugs. I won't give any more than that away. I thoroughly enjoyed this video second time around but I wouldn't recommend it's for everyone. I think if you can take it all in, it is not just gratuitous glitz and excessive violence.
Dark City is a sci-fi whodunit. Written and directed by Australian Alex Proyas (The Crow) it has the same eerie, dark feel to it as Batman's Gotham City. The story follows murder suspect John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell.) As the movie begins, we see John awaken in a bath, the body of a dead woman is in the same room. John has amnesia and if it wasn't for the voice of Doctor Schreber (Keiffer Sutherland) who narrates the first few minutes of the movie most people would probably give up there and then. Thankfully, through the voice of Doctor Schreber we are given a tiny glimpse into what is going on.
The Strangers have the ability to "tune" or change reality at their will. At the stroke of twelve every night they literally shut down the city and with the help of Doctor Schreber twist and manipulate the lives of the people, intertwining their memories and completely changing reality. However, John Murdoch, it seems, also possesses the gift of tuning and it is because of this that The Strangers are in hot pursuit of him, hoping they can find the answers to their quest for survival in his mind.
This all sounds rather convoluted and it is necessary to really watch this movie to understand just what is going on. It does, thankfully, all come together in the end. Strangely enough, considering the dark tones of this movie, it is actually a love story at heart...albeit a very strange one!
Give it a go...you may be surprised at just how good it is!
