THE X-FILES: FIGHT THE FUTURE
Personally, I love the X-Files so it would be hard for me to review this movie from a totally objective point of view. Having said that I still think it was pretty darn good. It's no blockbuster, in fact it's really not that different from a two hour version of the TV show but then I happen to think the TV show is great. My husband who has probably watched a grand total of three or four episodes of the X-Files also liked this movie so that says something! I must admit that I was slightly disappointed with one facet of this movie. I had heard it rumored that there was going to be a lot of sexual tension between Mulder and Scully and in X-Files: Fight the Future I thought it was all going to come to a head. Well, I watched and I watched and I saw nothing that made my heart race. Instead of reviewing this movie I am just going to say three things. One...if you are an X-Files fan you will love it. Two...if you're not an X-Files fan, it's a good sci/fi flick and it will probably leave you with the feeling that you really should watch the TV show more often. Three...if you have watched the TV show and absolutely hate it I very much doubt that this movie will change your opinion. This is a very well made movie, it has a good solid script, some exceptional special effects and the usual Mulder and Scully acting from David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Rent it!
Belly laughs that just keep coming at you don't happen that often in movies nowadays. The last time I can remember laughing as hard as this was the scene in So, I Married an Axe Murderer when the Scottish father discusses the size of his sons head. (If you've never seen So, I Married an Axe Murderer it's worth watching for this scene alone!) Directors, Peter and Bobby Farrelly take comedy right to the edge. Bordering between "crude, bad taste" and "plain gross" they manage to hit the mark as they make fun of anything and everything. While this movie has the potential to offend just about everyone, the sight gags are done with such openness and hilarity that it's really impossible to be offended at all.
The casting of this movie was spot on. Cameron Diaz is delightful as Mary, a sweet, beautiful woman who seems to attract some very strange men. Ben Stiller is Ted, a rather nerdy high school lad who is over the moon when Mary asks him to be her date for the Prom. Needless to say, things don't quite go as planned. After some absolutely hilarious scenes the movie skips forward thirteen years. Ted is still thinking about Mary every day and finally after some prodding from a friend, decides to hire an investigator to find her. Enter Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) a sleazy Insurance Claims Investigator who manages to find Mary and, like everyone else becomes smitten with her. Wanting to keep Mary for himself, Pat gives Ted a bogus report about how Mary is now an overweight, wheelchair bound Mother of four who is about to head off overseas to become a mail order bride, and then starts pursuing her himself. After finding out about Pat's lies, Ted heads off to find Mary.
As this movie relies heavily on sight gags, giving too much of it away would spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet. Suffice to say that while it does occasionally lag, there were enough gut wrenching belly laughs to keep me glued to the screen. I kept thinking "they can't go any further" ... and then they did! "A witty, wonderful, watchable movie!"
Blade is played by Wesley Snipes who despite a chequered track record is always eminently watchable. His fantastic physique lends a lot to this part as there is a lot of martial arts type of fighting. Unfortunately he is very one dimensional, trying too hard to be the untouchable hero.
The plot certainly doesn't cater for Mensa members but it isn't dull. Basically, Blade kicks vampire butt from start to finish, with a variety of special effects that are truly stunning as is the speed and vigour of the fighting. Blade's mission in life is to kill all the vampires but it is ironic that he is half one himself - a Daywalker to the uninitiated. The plot is thickened by the grand plan of world domination that the vampires are trying to hatch as well as the fact that Blade is showing signs of becoming more vampire than human. Not to mention he only has so long to help his new love interest who has been bitten by the villains. Fast, furious and filled with gore it's your cup of tea if you enjoyed Dusk till Dawn - this movie is no yawn.
