VAMPIRES (JOHN CARPENTER'S)

Vampires - the slayers

James Woods with the crossbow

Starring - James Woods, Daniel Baldwin, Sheryl Lee, Thomas Ian Griffith, Maximilian Schell
Director - John Carpenter
Rating - MA (15+)
Length - 107 minutes

Actress Sheryl Lee, goes from pretty young woman... To pretty ugly vampire...

From pretty to pretty ugly...with just one bite!

It would be really easy to dismiss this movie as cinematic garbage and I am sure that many will.  I have been a big "Carpenter" fan since "The Thing" starring Kurt Russell.   Vampires unfortunately does not achieve that film's quality.

Vampires has no plot.  James Woods and Daniel Baldwin head an outfit of vampires slayers.  Their favourite method of eradicating the vermin is to harpoon them with an oversized crossbow bolt which has a steel cable attached.   They then winch them out into the sunlight which turns the vampires into a one ghoul pyrotechnic show.  James Woods is great as the cool but irreverent head slayer.   His offhand one liners in the bloodiest of situations ensures that all the violence and gore can be overshadowed by humour ... very dark humour.

James Woods as Jack Crow...

...and his trusty sidekick Montoya (Daniel Baldwin)

This film is very much like Dusk till Dawn (though not nearly as good).  So, if you like your vampire movies totally tongue in cheek with liberal splashes of graphic violence, you'll find something worth watching in this film.

"Mindless violence with some funny moments..."

If you're a James Woods fan or if you enjoyed Dusk Till Dawn, Blade and the Evil Dead series give this movie a go.  (Although it's not quite up to the standard of these other movies it's still worth watching...)

A SIMPLE PLAN

Bill Paxton and Billy Bob ThorntonStarring - Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, Bridget Fonda, Brent Briscoe, Gary Cole, Becky Ann Baker, Chelcie Ross
Director -
Sam Raimi
Screenplay - Scott B. Smith, based on his novel.
Rating - R
Length -
123 minutes

Finding 4.4 million dollars would be most people's dream.   A Simple Plan graphically demonstrates how it could turn out to be your worst nightmare.

Three men, Hank (Bill Paxton) a normal, level headed young father-to-be, his brother Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jacob's friend Lou stumble across an airplane that has crashed in the snow. On board is the body of the pilot and a payload of 4.4 million dollars.  They make a simple plan of holding onto the money until the plane is found and any inquiries are over.

Bridget FondaWell the simple plan gets horribly complicated basically due to fear and greed.  The body count gets way out of hand as Hank with much prompting from his wife Sarah (Bridget Fonda) tries to keep the secret under wraps.

This is a dark, dreary movie that never really gets out of second gear.  The cast is really strong and the situations they get put into are compelling yet it remains a pretty tedious watch.

The best is left to the end, which I won't give away but this movie just may fix any recurring dreams you have about finding large sums of money.

"This is not a rollercoaster ride ...
more like a steady escalator ride to the basement of despair."
